Orphan aPad video of Google Android Market

by PlutoPorkPie on May.19, 2010, under BLT's China Gadget Reviews

I thought it might be a good idea to display how easy it is to choose and install applications from Google’s Android Market using the Orphan iRobot aPad.  The main goal of this aPad video was to show how smooth and seamless the whole process is.

I start by tapping the Market icon, which instantly signs me into the Google Android Market. From here I get to choose from a large range of categories, including games, tools, applications and so on. Within each category, a further category exists to further refine the search. The actual software listing displays items by rating or release date. On the right side there is a star ranking which is based on user’s own submitted rating.

Once I’ve browsed the list of categorized software and made my choice, I can tap the title of the software in the list and I’m taken straight to the information about the software. Contained here is also a place where other users can leave comments.

Once I choose install I’m then shown what access the software will require to different aspects of the aPad’s  system & hardware. This is useful information like will the application have access to your webcam, GPS location, or be able to access your call list and so on.

After I have agreed to continue the installation after reviewing it’s access rights. The task then moves to the background and I can continue to browse and choose software. Many applications can be queued up for installation and each app on average takes around 15 seconds to download and then install if connected to a 1 to 2 MB broadband connection.

Hope you enjoy the video and feel free to comment and request any other functionality you would like to see.

Until next time,

Orphan P88 iTablet Video & Gallery – iPad beater

by BLT on Apr.30, 2010, under BLT's China Gadget Reviews

I am very happy today to get my hands on the Orphan P88, this must be my most favorite finished tablet I have ever had the pleasure to use.  In the past before release it was also known as the  Shenzhen Orphan P88.

P88-Orphan

P88-Orphan

First off, the thing that really caught my eye was the smooth finish to the casing.

The casing seems to ooze quality.  The build  seems to be very solid all round with the focus on light weight but strong design. I especially like the chrome trim on the edge of the screen.

So it looks like the two main selling points of this new tablet will be smooth curves on the outside and smooth frame rates on the inside with generally all specs being in the upper echelons of tabletdom

With clear definition and the wide screen I found I could run 2 IE browser windows side-by-side if required, or two video windows.

Windows 7 looks and performs great on the tablet, and it’s a real head turner. I wonder how sexy it would look running a previous version of Snow Leopard?

When viewing pictures, it has the nice feature of when you physically rotate the unit the onscreen view switches between landscape and portrait view.

As you can see in the video the P88 plays a 720p video clip full screen without any problems at all.

Specifications:

WiFi,

Intel N450 Atom Processor

Intel 950 graphics and chip set

2.5” Hard Drive 160GB or 320GB

Internal Webcam

Memory: 1 or 2 gigabytes of DDR

3 USB 2.0 Ports

Optional GPS Tracker or 3G modules.

5 in 1 SD/MS/MMC/ms-pro card slot support

I’ve found the P88 currently available in stock to buy from here.

The distance to maintain good performance indoors is around 200 meters, and around 830 meters outdoors depending on the access point’s coverage and environmental conditions.

The chip set used is the Ra-link RT2870. This chip set works right off the bat with all reasonably resent distributions of Linux, including Back Track 4, Ubunto and so on.

The included disc contains RT2870 drivers for Windows XP, XP 64-bit, Vista 32-bit, Vista 64-bit, Windows 7 and Windows 2000. Installation was quick and for me it required no restart of XP.

USB Ionic Air Purifier

by BLT on Apr.21, 2010, under BLT's China Gadget Reviews

I was craving for a gadget fix today so I decided to test out the IonCare USB Ionic Air Purifier. Upon inspection of the information contained on the box and the manual it says it is a simple way to improve the air quality around the computer and the computer user. Now this is music to my ears as I have a very acute sense of smell and the concept of anything that can clean the air and only weighs a few grams really appeals to me.

The unit consumes 0.3w and is a standard 5V USB powered device. The unit weighs only a few grams, so therefore qualifies for the list of items I will allow myself to put in my laptop bag when I travel.

As there are no moving parts I was curious as to how you can tell if the unit is doing anything at all, as apart from the LED lighting up when you plug it in what’s to indicate that it’s in action and actually doing what it claims? Then I spotted this part of the instruction manual where it says, “if you put your hand near to the air outlet of the device you can feel a breeze touching your skin”. That’s the flow of negative ions streaming out of the device and removing dirt particles. A quick test proved the claims straight away, the gentle feeling of a breeze was easily felt against my hand.

So now the question on my mind was is it making the air more free of dirt and other particles? While I did not do any scientific tests to check the air quality around the device I did notice an often outdoor like fresh air smell around my laptop. Which sounds strange at first I know, but after all, Ionic air purifiers are tried and tested technology that is fully proven and established in mainstream use for many years.

So I have to give a thumbs-up to the USB Ionic Air Purifier as it’s a very convenient way to improve the quality of the air you breathe and also is a very portable version of a classic proven technology. I can see more and more devices moving to USB power in the future, so we can say good bye to stacks of PSUs all plugged into the mains taking up valuable socket space and also consuming more power than a device requires.

My conclusion is if you want a portable air purifier that you can take with you anywhere, you cannot go wrong with this unit, it does actually what it said it would and is far cheaper than other units that are heavier, less portable and require their own in built power units. My one’s now firmly at home on my laptop and I am now considering adding one to all of my machines. Btw the printed manual is in Chinese and English.
